Markings 10 years with Art Inside Out
October January 2027
It is with great pleasure that we present Markings – 10 Years with Art Inside Out. The exhibition reflects a decade of artistic work and includes twenty-six previous residency artists who work with installation, video and painting as well as performance, sound and text.
Ten years ago, Region Halland and Halland’s six municipalities joined together in a unique collaboration to strengthen Halland as a region for artistic production. Together, they started Art Inside Out – a nomadic institution for artistic residencies and a platform for artistic development and innovation. Since then, over eighty Swedish and international contemporary artists and cultural practitioners have visited Halland.
Markings – 10 Years with Art Inside Out reflects a decade of artistic work and includes twenty-six artists who work with installation, video and painting as well as performance, sound and text.
At the invitation of Art Inside Out, the participating artists have taken part in residencies around Halland. Here they have worked in open and exploratory processes and created new artworks in encounters with shifting geographies; localities, stories and experiences, both in urban spaces and in the countryside. The artworks have been shaped by different discursive frameworks and interdisciplinary fields, which are mirrored in a wide range of subjects and artistic methods. These include questions of belonging and alienation, what a home is and can be, and the imprint of art in urban development. But also, fragile ecological interactions, the engravings of memory in a landscape and the more-than-human.
Artistic residencies have a distinctive role in artistic development and offer artists the opportunity to step out of the ordinary and visit new localities where life and art intertwine with new encounters. The artworks in this exhibition are deeply rooted in the Halland soil. Like markings, they lead us through sites and environments such as the fields at Äskhult village, Grimeton Radio Station, Grötvik’s quarry, the sand dunes of Laholm bay and Åstorp’s bog. Through the specific and the local, our society is reflected in all its complexity and contradictions. The artworks function almost like a seismograph where the past, present and future are sensed and interpreted. New dialogues arise that both deepen and defy how we look at ourselves and our surroundings.
The exhibition will be presented at Halland’s Art Museum, a site for the whole of Halland and a natural gathering point for the region’s art scene. The museum’s premises provide the opportunity to gather several of the artworks produced over the years and present them here to both locals and visitors. Some of the artworks have been exhibited before, in localities across Halland where the works were originally created, often in environments far removed from the traditional art spaces. Other artworks were initiated during the residencies and have been further developed for this exhibition.
