What happens when others are invited as co-creators in artistic processes? And how is the artistic work affected when ideas are developed together? Art Inside Out new residency AIO CoLab is a platform where artists co-create in collective artistic processes. First up is the artist Signe Johannessen, who during the summer of 2025 invites a group of young summer workers to a Sea Colony in Laholmsbukten.

The Sea Colony

Are you longing to return to the sea? Have you ever looked for webbing between your toes? Or tried to hold your breath as long as you can under the surface of the water? Have you perhaps considered that the tears that are squeezed out of your eyes have the same salt content as the ocean itself? Or, is your body just a little bit too human and are you curious about who you would be if you went back to living in the sea?

In a time of planetary crisis, when the Earth’s sea levels are rising inexorably, the Sea Colony opens up to participants who yearn for an aquatic coexistence. The Sea Colony is a temporary place that invites contact with the great ocean for those who are not afraid to transform themselves into something sea-living. Beyond human understanding.

Signe Johannessen’s Sea Colony is an artistic experiment and a playful expedition that takes place in and around the Laholmsbukten for three weeks in the summer of 2025. Together with a group of young summer workers, the Sea Colony is created which, through joint artistic work, investigative and practical experiments, explores our relationship to our inner and outer atlantic.

As the first of Art Inside Out’s new residency – AIO CoLab – the Sea Colony dives into a colorful world where a new kind of evolution can take shape, where floats and fins emerge and where, for a limited time, another ocean-borne reality emerges .

Parts of Havskolonin will be filmed and become a new artistic film work.
