Signe Johannessen
Signe Johannessen (1978) works with sculpture, video, drawing and performance. Her work is often developed through participatory processes and in collaboration with other fields of knowledge. Her works speculate on hybrid bodies, historical paraphrases and post-humanist possibilities. By playfully combining fragments from her own life story with historical archives, she renegotiates both traumatic and pleasurable encounters between humans and other animals, while giving new meaning to the concepts of family and kinship. By working in the misty borderlands of dusk and dawn, Johannessen explores the possibilities of belonging and becoming, while revealing the structures and resistance of power.
Together with artist Erik Rören, she forms the artist duo Rören/Johannessen. Johannessen is also one of the founders and artistic directors of Art Lab Gnesta, a collective and experimental art platform located in the Sörmland countryside. Signe Johannessen is educated at the Oslo Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.
