Henna-Riikka Halonen
Henna-Riikka Halonen (Helsinki, Finland) works with film, performance, drawing, text and installation that make us imagine and experience the world anew.
“I am interested in self-care as a radical act and during the residency I have become more stubborn and self-aware as a starting point for creating new roles outside of the ones we are used to and new ways of being. I reflect based on my role as an artist; what is expected of us and what do we contribute to society as a whole, how do we move forward and what do we do now? Finding new ways of acting can be seen as an integral part of self-care, as a way to refuse categorization and as a way to challenge ourselves. During the residency, I have discovered the importance of play. Playing is an interesting way to transcend categorizations and challenge boundaries, whether they are individual, societal or linguistic”.
Halonen, born in 1975, has a Master’s in Visual Arts from Goldsmiths in London and is a doctoral candidate in Visual Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki.
