Emotional Urban Planning: The Scream Hole
When designing modern cities, it is important to view urban development as an emotional, social, and sensory process rather than a purely functional one. The project “Emotional Urban Planning” focuses on the fragile, ambivalent, and vulnerable aspects of those who use the city. Artist John Huntington identifies five key qualities that should be integrated into contemporary urban development: sorrow, anger, inactivity, uncertainty, and invisibility. Huntington discusses the various components of the project, explaining how he draws upon the visions and language found in existing urban development processes—only to then delve into what is missing or omitted from these documents and plans. Herein lies the potential for art to be both playfully speculative and profoundly serious at the same time.
This webinar is part of the series “Designed Living Environment over Breakfast” (*Gestaltad livsmiljö till frukost*) and is organized through a collaboration between the following regions: Region Värmland, Region Halland, Region Gävleborg, and Region Blekinge.
