Tidal Tongues : Performance and Seaweed Meal

24/08/2025 14:00 – 17:00 "Första vik", Getterön, Varberg

Tidal Tongues is a performance and workshop by Maj Horn (DK) and Sarah Blissett (UK) made site-specific for the Getterön nature reserve in Varberg.

Join us on the shoreline to explore seaweed stories as ways to rethink our connection to these vital marine life forms. The project aims to highlight the important role that seaweeds play in the ocean ecosystem during this time of climate crisis, while also taking participants on a creative journey into underwater worlds through poetic reflections and performative rituals.

Tidal Tongues will begin with a performance lecture by Horn and Blissett about the connections between humans and seaweeds, and the many species that rely on them for food and shelter. This will be followed by a workshop in which participants are invited to think and create together. Finally, we will cook together using Egg Wrack, Sugar Kelp and Bladderwrack, and enjoy a communal seaweed feast.

Sarah Blissett is an artist and researcher. Her work explores human-non-human entanglements in performance with a focus on algae ecosystems and intertidal ecology. Maj Horn is an artist with a research-based practice exploring new approaches and narratives about landscapes and environments.

Practical information

Collective outdoor cooking (vegetarian) with local seaweed is included in the performance. Please let us know if you have any allergies.

Participants are encouraged to stay for the entire workshop and join us for the meal – but you are also welcome to only participate in either of the parts.

For transportation to the workshop, we offer a connecting bus from Varberg station. More details about its schedule and registration for it will be provided in this event after the vacation.

Tidal Tongues is produced in collaboration with Varberg Konsthall and seaweed diver Eva-Maria Hay, who has both harvested and fermented seaweed specifically for this occasion.
