The Architecture of Necessity

How do we build new without losing what gives our places beauty, identity and meaning?

In this webinar, architect Karolina Keyzer uses our architectural and cultural heritage as an active resource in today’s urban planning, not as an obstacle, but as a guide. Using examples from Swedish and international practice, she discusses issues of beauty and architectural quality, of beauty and ugliness in public spaces, and how safety and security can be integrated into the designed living environment without becoming repressive or unsightly.

The lecture introduces an urban planning model where historical layers, human scale and careful design are combined with contemporary demands for robustness, resilience and safety, an architecture of necessity that creates safe urban spaces without destroying what needs to be protected.

The talks are arranged by the program group with representatives from Region Blekinge (Torun Ekstrand), Region Gävleborg (Erik Anderman), Region Värmland (Hannes Trygg) and Region Halland (Davor Abazovic).
